Ardardagh and Tirlahode are located to the south-east of Cavan Town and represent another cluster of Rudden families spanning townlands. This more than likely indicates the siblings and cousins of one family spreading out onto neighbouring tenancies through time.

Native of Ardardagh.
The below headstone for James B. Rudden can be found in Calvary Cemetery, Woodside, Queen’s County, New York. James was born in Ardardagh in 1835 and died in Brooklyn, New York in 1885. Sadly, we can also see that James and his wife Ann lost their son James B Rudden in 1871, at aged 2 years 9 months.
Ann erected this headstone for her husband and son and clearly wanted her husband’s birthplace of Ardardagh in Co. Cavan, to be memorialised.
James died without leaving a Will and this meant his wife Ann had to petition through the Surrogates Court in King’s County in order to deal with his small estate. This document is an extremely useful source of family history and from it we learn he had no living children, his parents were deceased, he had a brother Michael living in Brooklyn and a brother Joseph living back in Ireland. It is most likely that the Joseph Rudden living in number 2 Ardardagh on the 1901 census recorded above, is indeed the brother of said James.
