Hi,

well this is good, a Rudden site!

On the origin of the name Rudden, I believe it is originally an old Anglo-Saxon name, and they had land and estates in Northumbria,England from about 400 AD. They later had lands also in Scotland. Apparently a lot emigrated to Ireland in 15,16,17th centuries, particularly the Donegal area.

On my branch of Ruddens, I’ve found out that my gr-gr-grandfather was James Rudden, born in Ireland about 1840. He moved with some others to Lancashire in about 1850. His family, and his brother Owen’s family, (and perhaps some others) moved to Bradford, Yorkshire in about 1870.

My gr-grandfather was John Rudden, married to Mary. Their offspring were James,Mary,Alice,John Joseph and my grandfather Tom, he moved from Bradford to Leicester about 1920.

The message from Gina is interesting, regarding the Bradford/South Africa link – my great-uncle James Rudden (born 1885 and died in WW1 in the Somme)was married to Hannah, they had a son called James, who I believe had a son called Philip, who moved to South Africa.

Well, it would be great to hear from anyone, especially if you recognise a connection with any of this,if you have links to Bradford/ Skipton, there is probably a connection there.

  1. Hi
My Grandfather John Rudden was from Cavan Co. He emigated to US ( date not certain but researchable) and was a NYC cop. He married Kate Duffy and had my Dad, M. Joseph in 1898, Helen and John Jr.

My aunt told the story of her Uncle OWEN RUDDEN, who had worked in the coal mines in Wales. I was only 16 when I heard this story in 1973, shortly before my aunt Helen died. He was back in Ireland during the fight for freedom and the British soldiers were ransacking homes and probaly worse! The who soldier entered recognized my uncle as a buddy from the mines. He just backed out of their home and they were spared whatever deed the soldiers were orded to do to the locals.

  2. Phillip, my grandmother was Mary E Rudden. Sister to your Tom. hope to hear from you.
